Residents Urged to Stay Safe as Subzero Wind Chills Continue

KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - The Knox County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is warning residents to take precautions as dangerously cold wind chills continue.

Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, and extreme cold increases the risk of hypothermia.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, scarves, and warm footwear; limit time outdoors; bring pets inside; and check on neighbors who are elderly, medically fragile, or have young children.

Homeowners should also ensure heating systems are working safely and that carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working.

Knox County Water is also encouraging residents to take action to prevent frozen pipes.

The office says it has received several calls about frozen pipes.

“Please let your faucets drip—a small drip is enough to keep water flowing through the pipes,” Knox County Water said in a statement.

“A drip will not significantly increase your water bill.”

The National Weather Service is forecasting wind chills below zero on through Wednesday morning.

Wind chills are expected to drop below zero again Thursday night and remain below zero through Sunday morning.
