Officials Reminding Residents to Use Fireworks Responsibly

KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Both the Vincennes Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office are encouraging residents to be mindful when using fireworks.

In Vincennes and across Knox County, fireworks are permitted on July 4 from 10:00am to midnight.

Fireworks can continue to be set off until July 9, between 5:00pm and two hours after sunset.

Vincennes Police Assistant Chief Mark Hensley told WAKC News Now the department has already received about 20 fireworks-related calls this year.

Chief Deputy John Fuller says the sheriff’s office received eight fireworks complaints last year.

“All of them were unfounded because the fireworks were being set off in the time allowed by law,” said Fuller.

Hensley also reminded residents that fireworks should be used safely and only on their own property.

“Make sure your fireworks are landing on your own property,” he said.

“That’s something people sometimes overlook.”

In Indiana, fireworks can only be used on your own property, on property where the owner has given permission, or in a location specifically designated for consumer fireworks.

Only individuals 18 and older are allowed to purchase them.

Both Hensley and Fuller also remind residents to be considerate of veterans and those with pets.

“Individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other types of medical conditions are vulnerable this time of year,” Fuller said.

“Loud, unexpected sounds may trigger their symptoms.”

Fireworks can also be distressing for pets, causing them to shake, bark, or run away in fear.
