KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - A Knox County resident was awarded one of the state’s highest honors.
Dan Short received the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Indiana Governor Mike Braun.
The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and the state.
Short, a deputy sheriff and school resource officer, tells WAKC News Now the recognition came as a surprise.
“Receiving the award is a deeply humbling honor."
Over the years, Short has volunteered with several local organizations, including the Knox County 4-H Council, Helping His Hands, and the Knox County Emergency Management Agency.
Short has also played a role in bringing trapshooting and archery programs to students at South Knox schools.
Short said the recognition reflects the time he’s dedicated to helping others and supporting the community.
“To be recognized as a Distinguished Hoosier means that the time spent helping others, standing up for our communities, and working to make a positive difference has not gone unnoticed,” Short said.
When asked about moments that stand out, Short recalled responding to a medical emergency where he helped save a South Knox student’s life.
“Seeing the student start breathing again on her own after CPR and the AED was an amazing feeling,” Short said.
Short said the recognition is not just about him, but about the community he serves.
“Knox County represents the kind of place where people still care about each other and want safe streets, good schools, and opportunities for the next generation.”
Short also recognized the people who have supported him along the way, including his daughter.
“Everyone that knows us knows how close we are, and she gives up a lot of time with me so I can pursue all the volunteer work that I do,” Short said.
