KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is preparing for both the severe storms and the heavy rain and widespread flooding forecasted to move through the area starting Wednesday.

The National Weather Service predicts double-digit rainfall totals for much of southern Indiana.

In Knox County, 8 to 10 inches of rain are expected by Sunday.

INDOT operations crews have been hard at work clearing drains and preparing equipment to close flooded state roads.

Workers will be on standby throughout the next few days to address any roadway issues that may arise.

Additionally, INDOT has been assisting the Department of Homeland Security and the National Guard with sandbag operations by providing sand and loading equipment.

Drivers are reminded to obey road closure signs and barricades to avoid becoming stranded in floodwaters or encountering downed trees or power lines.

According to NOAA:

  • 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over and carry away an adult.

  • 12 inches of fast-moving water can carry away a small car.

  • 18 to 24 inches of fast-moving water can carry away most large SUVs, vans, and trucks.
