VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - We are learning more about Good Samaritan’s decision to end its hospice service.
The hospital announced on Friday that the hospice services would end on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
Good Samaritan says hospice care has shifted over time, with more services now being provided by organizations focused solely on end-of-life care.
“After evaluating health care trends, the Executive Team and Board made this decision to focus on core hospital and outpatient services,” a spokesperson for Good Samaritan told WAKC News Now.
Palliative care will remain in place at Good Samaritan, offering patients support with symptom management, care planning, and coordination of care.
“Our intent is that there will be no gap in care,” the spokesperson said.
“We are actively working with area hospice agencies to finalize a transition plan and ensure a smooth process for patients and families.”
Good Samaritan says that current hospice patients will continue to receive the care they receive now through the end of the year.
A letter with more information and next steps will be sent out to hospice patients and their families once plans are finalized.
WAKC News Now asked Good Samaritan Hospital what would happen to hospice staff after the program closes.
“All impacted hospice staff will be offered positions within Good Samaritan,” the spokesperson confirmed with WAKC News Now.
Hospital leaders also acknowledged community concerns, calling hospice “a vital service,” and emphasized that while the hospital will no longer directly provide hospice care, it will remain available locally through trusted providers.
The hospital said it is committed to ensuring a seamless transition for patients and families.
