Vincennes Boy’s First Concert Becomes an Unforgettable Experience

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - What started as an early birthday surprise for a Vincennes boy on Thursday turned into a memory that will last a lifetime.

Eleven-year-old Blake Yochum and his parents, John and Kasey Yochum, attended country singer Thomas Rhett’s concert in Evansville to celebrate Blake’s upcoming birthday.

Blake had the opportunity to meet Rhett backstage before the concert through a meet-and-greet Kasey won.

During the meet-and-greet, Blake decided to take a chance and ask Thomas Rhett if he could go on stage during the concert.

“He asked, ‘What are you gonna do?’” Blake told WAKC News Now.

Blake said he told Rhett that he wanted to “dance and vibe.”

Rhett then asked if Blake could sing and whether he knew any of his songs.

“I told him, I know all your songs,” Blake said.

According to Blake, Rhett put him to the test, asking him to sing four songs backstage.

Blake eventually found out he would get the chance to go on stage.

“I just thought it was like a dream or something like that, you know, just a fantasy,” Blake said.

During the show, Rhett made an announcement to the crowd.

“I want to bring my buddy Blake on stage,” Rhett said.

Blake then came onto the stage, where Rhett introduced him to the crowd before the two sang part of Rhett’s song “Unforgettable.”

For Blake, the moment was both exciting and nerve-wracking.

“I had like a whole watermelon and not just a butterfly, like a whole watermelon in my stomach,” Blake said.

The experience was even more memorable because it was Blake’s first concert.

“My favorite part of the concert was getting to be close to the stage and hearing ‘Crash and Burn,’” Blake said.

Blake said the experience reminded him to take a chance when an opportunity comes his way.

“Always do what you think and try for the stars.”
