VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - As the community prepares for this year’s Shop with a Cop event, students at Riley Elementary School are adding to the effort.

On Friday, members of Riley’s Student Council presented a $200 check to the Vincennes Police Department to support the annual program.

According to a press release from the Vincennes Community School Corporation, students raised the money by purchasing baked goods made by teachers for just a quarter each.

Student Council sponsor Kellee Worland said the students were enthusiastic about helping a program that supports local children.

“The kids feel good about themselves that they’re able to give back and help other kids,” Worland said.

Several area businesses, including BridgePointe Health Campus, Rural King, and First Financial Bank, also made donations to the program.

Vincennes Police Department Public Information Officer Macey Baxter said the event relies heavily on community support.

“We would like to thank each and every one of them for their support,” said Baxter.

Shop with a Cop will take place on Tuesday.

Officers from the Vincennes Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, local Conservation officers, and staff from the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office, Knox County Probation Office, and Knox County DCS will meet at Walmart to take participating children shopping.

The Vincennes Police Department told WAKC News Now that each child will receive $250 to spend on Christmas gifts.

“The event helps the children and families of PACE to have a great Christmas,” said Baxter.

More than 200 children are expected to participate in this year’s program.
