Vincennes Animal Shelter at Full Capacity; Residents Encouraged to Adopt

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - The Vincennes Animal Shelter has reached its maximum capacity.

Shelter Director Leah Reagan told WAKC News Now on Friday that all dog kennels are filled.

Three of the kennels currently house litters of puppies.

The shelter is also overflowing with cats and kittens, prompting staff to set up temporary kennels in a back room.

Reagan said several factors have contributed to the shelter’s capacity challenges, including pets surrendered by city residents, returned adoptions, litters of puppies and kittens, and dogs running loose throughout the county that have been picked up but remain unclaimed.

Last month alone, the shelter took in around 30 dogs from the county.

The growing number of animals has made day-to-day operations increasingly difficult.

“It takes the entire day to clean, medicate, and feed the animals,” Reagan said.

The shelter encourages anyone considering adopting a furry friend to take action now.

Several dog adoptions have been sponsored recently, meaning some people may be able to bring home their “fur-ever” friend at no cost.

“Come out, spend time with the dogs, and get to know them. Make sure it’s a good fit,” Reagan said.

For those unable to adopt, volunteering remains a vital way to help.

The shelter needs assistance with everything from feeding and cleaning to walking dogs, and playing with cats.

Additionally, the shelter is in need of supplies such as kitten food (wet and dry), dog food, blankets, laundry and dish soap, bleach, and multipurpose cleaner.

Anyone interested in adopting or volunteering can visit the shelter Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The shelter is located at 1128 River Road in Vincennes.
