SANDBORN, Ind. (We Are Knox County) – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to avoid flooded roads with a familiar but simple message: Turn around, don’t drown.
Emergency crews were called out Tuesday morning after a driver became stuck in floodwaters on State Road 58 near the Knox/Daviess County line, close to Sandborn.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office tells WAKC News Now that the driver’s vehicle was swept off the road by high water in an area where road closed signs had been posted.
The driver reportedly remained trapped in her vehicle for about an hour and a half before being spotted by a member of the levee commission who was out inspecting the area and called for help.
In Indiana, it is illegal to drive around road closure or traffic control signs.
Violating these signs is a traffic offense under Indiana law and can lead to fines.
If someone is injured as a result, the penalties become more serious.
According to the National Weather Service, it only takes 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock over an adult, 12 inches to move a small car, and 18 to 24 inches to carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and trucks.
