Driver Rescued After Floodwaters Sweep Car Off State Road 358

EDWARDSPORT, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Officials are reminding drivers not to ignore road closure signs after a driver had to be rescued from floodwaters near northern Knox County.

According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 7:00 Monday morning on State Road 358 near Edwardsport.

The sheriff’s office tells WAKC News Now the driver went around road closed and high water signs and drove into floodwaters.

The rushing water then swept the car off the road and into a nearby field.

When first responders arrived, they found the driver standing on top of the vehicle waiting for help.

The driver was rescued and brought safely to land, where they reportedly refused medical treatment.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says the driver was cited by a Department of Natural Resources officer for disregarding a road closed sign.

The Knox County Emergency Management Agency says “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” is not just a slogan — it’s a lifesaving message.

“When you ignore road closure signs, you risk your life and the lives of first responders,” the agency said in a statement.

According to the National Weather Service, just 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.

State Road 358 between Edwardsport and Plainville remains closed until further notice.
