VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Accused murderer Dylan Smith appeared in court on Thursday.
During the pre-trial hearing, a change-of-plea hearing was scheduled for Friday, October 31, at 3:30 p.m.
Knox County Prosecutor Dirk Carnahan told WAKC News Now that the defense requested the hearing, but no plea agreement or offer has been made.
“Usually this judge will not set a change of plea unless there is an agreement — and there is none in this case,” Carnahan said.
The newly scheduled hearing has also pushed back Smith’s trial, which is now set for April 21, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. in Knox County Circuit Court.
Smith was arrested on August 5 and charged with murder.
According to police, Smith allegedly shot 30-year-old Taylor Hendershot in the parking lot of Cardinal Liquor in Vincennes before barricading himself inside a nearby residence for several hours.
During Smith’s initial hearing on August 6, he pleaded not guilty.
The defense filed notice that it intends to raise an insanity defense on September 12.
