WHEATLAND, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - After years of planning and months of work, construction of Wheatland’s new Town Hall is now complete.
An open house was held Sunday to celebrate the project’s completion.
The new building marks a major upgrade from the town’s previous facility on State Road 550.
“It was not ADA accessible and it did not have running water or a restroom,” Wheatland Town Board Vice President Brett Dawson told WAKC News Now.
In addition to running water and three restrooms, the new Town Hall includes a public meeting space, a conference room, and offices for the town’s clerk, utility, and street departments.
It also features a small satellite office where Knox County Sheriff’s deputies or Knox County Emergency Management Agency personnel can work if needed.
Dawson said this is the first time some employees have had a true workspace.
“This building gives them the proper facility to do their daily duties and a place to actually work out of instead of their vehicles or their homes, because that’s about all they had to work out of,” Dawson said.
Work on the $1.3 million project broke ground earlier this year.
The new Town Hall is located across from the Steen Township Volunteer Fire Department at the corner of South Niblack Street and East Adams Street.
According to Dawson, employees officially moved into the building last week.
Wheatland Town Hall is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
The phone number for Wheatland Town Hall is 812-321-2340.
