Wabash Valley Progressives Cancel Festival Latino Over Safety Concerns

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - The annual Festival Latino event in Vincennes has been canceled for this year.

The announcement was made on Saturday through a statement posted on the Wabash Valley Progressives’ (WVP) Facebook page.

Organizers explained that they believe holding the festival this year could create unintended risks.

"After much heartfelt discussion about the recent policies and actions of the federal and state government on immigration, we feel that we would be putting the safety of our Latino community at risk," the statement read.

WVP President Ray McCormick told WAKC News Now that making the decision was not easy.

The event, which began eight years ago, was started to offer a welcoming space, show appreciation, and celebrate Latino culture with the wider community.

In the statement, organizers mentioned that they are now focusing on supporting and fulfilling the needs of all immigrants in the Wabash Valley.

Those interested in supporting or helping the WVP are encouraged to attend the next committee meeting on Tuesday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. at 1010 Washington Avenue.

"Community members can contact ALASI (Latin American Association of Southern Indiana) at 812-817-1545 for assistance with immigration questions," WVP Treasurer Jen Holscher told WAKC News Now.

"They can be advocates for Latinos and show their appreciation for their contributions to our community."

McCormick said that the organization hopes to bring Festival Latino back as soon as possible.

Both McCormick and Holscher confirmed with WAKC News Now that Rainbow Over The Bridge, the annual Pride event, will still take place.

The event will be held on June 21 at the Rendezvous Ground in Vincennes.

"We will have security and emergency management on hand," Holscher said.
