Vincennes Teacher Recognized for Saving Choking Student

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - A Vincennes Community School Corporation teacher is being honored for her heroic actions during a medical emergency in her classroom earlier this spring.

Renae Wild, a second-grade teacher at Franklin Elementary, was formally recognized on Tuesday by Vincennes City Fire Chief Bret Bobe, who presented her with a Certificate of Heroism.

According to the Vincennes Community School Corporation, the incident took place in April when a student in Mrs. Wild’s class began choking after accidentally swallowing part of a pencil they had been chewing.

Wild performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the object and allowing the student to breathe again.

In addition to Tuesday’s recognition, Wild was also commended for her life-saving actions during the VCSC School Board meeting in May.
