Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum Selected as Democratic Candidate for Indiana Senate District 39

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum has been selected as the Democratic nominee for Indiana's 39th State Senate District.

Yochum was selected during a caucus in Washington on Thursday evening after previous Democratic candidate Joseph Baughman withdrew from the race.

Yochum announced his intention to seek the nomination earlier this week.

Yochum has served as mayor of Vincennes for 15 years and says he plans to continue serving as mayor while campaigning for the Senate seat.

If elected, Yochum would have to step down as mayor before taking office as state senator.

Yochum told WAKC News Now that if he is elected, the Democratic Party in Vincennes would select someone to complete the remainder of his mayoral term.

District 39 stretches across six counties, including Greene, Daviess, Knox, and Martin counties, as well as portions of Owen and Sullivan counties.

Yochum is running against Republican Jeff Ellington for Indiana's 39th State Senate District seat.

The Indiana State Senate is responsible for creating and voting on state laws, approving the state budget, and representing communities across Indiana.

The general election will be held on November 3.
