VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - We are learning more information about the death of a man who helped organized Vincennes’ annual Fourth of July fireworks show.
According to the Knox County Coroner’s Office, 73-year-old Robert “Bob” Johnson died Friday following a “fireworks-related incident” that occurred in Lawrenceville, Illinois.
An autopsy performed on the morning of July 5 determined that Johnson died as the result of a traumatic brain injury sustained while setting off commercial fireworks, the coroner’s office said.
Authorities in Illinois are continuing to investigate the incident.
According to the Vincennes Mayor’s Office, Johnson helped organize and conduct the city’s fireworks show for many years.
On Saturday, the Mayor’s Office announced the annual fireworks display would be postponed following Johnson’s death.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the Mayor’s Office said.
“Thank you for your understanding as we honor his memory and the years he has dedicated to our community.”
Officials say a new date for the fireworks show will be decided and announced soon.
