VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - The Vincennes Animal Shelter celebrated the opening of its newly expanded and renovated space with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon.
“We have been planning and saving for this addition for the last 10 years,” Shelter Director Leah Reagan told WAKC News Now.
The 650-square-foot addition features an expanded medical exam room, a multipurpose space for training and educational classes, additional office space, and a dedicated meet-and-greet room where potential adopters can spend time with animals in a quiet, comfortable setting.
The front of the existing building also received a major update, with new siding, windows, doors, lighting, and signage added to match the new construction.
The addition and renovation are more than just a physical upgrade—they represent a step forward in creating a more efficient, welcoming space for both animals and the community.
“It helps us provide better, safer care for the animals, and it also makes it much easier for those looking to adopt to spend quality time with them,” Reagan said.
According to Reagan, most of the funding for the addition came from donations, fundraising efforts, and money saved through the shelter’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
The city of Vincennes covered the cost of the front building renovations.
The public is encouraged to visit and tour the updated facility.
The shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 1128 River Road in Vincennes.
