VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - A nationwide event connects people in the community with the people who help protect it is taking place on Tuesday.

National Night Out in Vincennes will be held from 6pm until 8pm at Gregg Park.

Assistant Chief Mark Hensley with the Vincennes Police Department told WAKC News Now that the annual event is a valuable opportunity for officers to build trust with residents in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

“You may have kids and adults who’ve had negative experiences with law enforcement,” Hensley said.

“This gives us a chance to strengthen the relationship in a positive way.”

Hensley added that building those relationships is important.

“We want people to feel comfortable approaching us and having conversations,” Hensley said.

The event will include food, giveaways, free swimming at Rainbow Beach, and more.

There will also be a K-9 demonstration, emergency vehicles including ambulances and firetrucks, and nearly 20 different organizations on hand with resources for the community.

Hensley said he’s excited for the evening.

“Come on out, talk to us, and enjoy some free food and swimming.”
