National HIV Testing Day: KCHD Reminds Residents to Get Tested

KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - National HIV Testing Day is Wednesday, June 27.

The Knox County Health Department encourages everyone to get tested and know their status.

You can get tested for HIV confidentially and for free at the Knox County Health Department, located at 328 North 2nd Street in Vincennes.

Walk-ins are accepted Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm, and on Wednesdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Test results are available immediately.

According to the Knox County Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 1.2 million Americans aged 13 years and older are living with HIV, and many don’t know they are infected.

The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once.

Those at higher risk should be tested every 3 to 6 months. This includes people who inject drugs and their sex partners, people who exchange sex for money or drugs, sex partners of people with HIV, sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, and heterosexuals who or whose sex partners have had more than one sex partner since their most recent HIV test.

HIV is transmitted through specific bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids, breastmilk, and blood. Besides sexual contact, HIV can be contracted by sharing needles with an HIV-positive person. It can also be transmitted through tattoo and piercing tools if they are not properly sterilized between clients.

HIV cannot be contracted from shaking hands, using public toilets, or coming into contact with an HIV-positive person's sweat or tears.
