KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - June 27 is National HIV Testing Day, and the Knox County Health Department is encouraging the community to take charge of their health.
Individuals can be tested for no out of pocket costs on Friday at the health department.
Free snacks and gifts are being offered to those who do get tested.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 32,000 people are newly infected with HIV each year in the U.S.
The virus is primarily spread through unprotected sex or sharing needles with someone who is HIV-positive.
HIV is not spread through casual contact, such as hugging, sharing food, or using the same toilet.
The CDC says that early diagnosis allows individuals to begin treatment sooner, which improves long-term health outcomes and helps prevent transmission through effective viral suppression.
There is no cure for HIV.
The Knox County Health Department is located at 328 North 2nd Street in Vincennes and will be open Friday from 8:00am until 4:00pm.
For questions about testing, call 812-822-8080.
