Firefighters Practice Ice Rescues; Remind Residents of Frozen Water Dangers

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Frozen ponds, lakes, and waterways can look solid—but they can be dangerously unpredictable, officials warn.

Firefighters with the Vincennes Township Fire Department have been taking advantage of the cold to train for ice rescues.

“Ice is never 100% safe,” Vincennes Township Fire Chief Tim Smith told WAKC News Now.

So far this year, the department has not responded to any rescues involving people or pets that have fallen through the ice.

If someone falls through the ice, Smith says the most important thing to remember is to stay on shore and call 911 immediately.

“Do not go onto the ice yourself,” Smith said, adding that cold water can turn dangerous in seconds.

Smith says that if you see someone needing help, reach out or throw the victim a rope, tree branch, or anything that floats—while staying on land.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources warns that if a pet or animal is in distress on the ice, people should not attempt a rescue themselves and should instead contact emergency responders.
