VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - A Knox County judge sentenced Dylan Smith to 60 years in prison for the murder of Taylor Hendershot.
Smith appeared in court Friday for his sentencing hearing, which began around 1:15 p.m. and lasted about half an hour.
During the hearing, Hendershot’s mother read a victim impact statement, describing the lasting impact of her daughter’s death on her family and on Hendershot’s child.

“You not only killed my daughter, you killed your son’s mother,” she told the court.
She ended her statement by reading a poem written by Hendershot and saying, “My daughter is at peace, and so am I.”
Smith also addressed the court, saying he understood the significance of the sentencing and expressed remorse for his actions.

“Please do not think or believe that there is one minute of any day that passes that I do not wish that I could change the course of my actions that played out that day,” Smith said.
Knox County Prosecutor Dirk Carnahan told WAKC News Now that Smith cannot appeal or request a modification of his sentence.
Smith did receive credit for time already served in jail while the case was pending.
According to police, Smith shot and killed Taylor Hendershot in the parking lot of a liquor store in Vincennes on the afternoon of August 5.
Police say Smith then left the scene, and a standoff at a nearby home on Carbon Street lasted several hours before he was taken into custody.
During Smith’s initial hearing on August 6, he entered a plea of not guilty.
In November, Smith changed his plea to guilty during a change-of-plea hearing.
Smith remains in the Knox County Jail while he awaits transfer to an Indiana Department of Correction facility.
