Court Documents Detail What Led to Arrest in Fatal Vincennes Fire
VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Investigators say a Vincennes house fire that killed a 19-year-old woman last week was intentionally set.
Thirty-seven-year-old Shane Michael Carie was arrested Thursday in connection with the fire and charged with murder and arson.
The fire happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday at a home on North 11th Street in Vincennes.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by We Are Knox County’s news partner WTWO, investigators believe Carie set the front porch of the home on fire using an open flame and combustible materials.
Investigators also reported smelling a strong odor of gasoline.
According to the affidavit, firefighters entered the home and found an unresponsive woman in a rear bedroom.
The woman, later identified as Aileese Tucker, was taken to a local hospital and later flown to Indianapolis, where she died.
According to the affidavit, the homeowners were out of state and Tucker was home alone at the time of the fire.
Court documents detail surveillance footage and witness statements investigators say helped connect Carie to the fire.
A neighbor told investigators she saw a man in a dark hoodie near the home before the fire.
Surveillance video from Riley Elementary School later showed a similarly dressed man walking toward the area around 9:35 p.m. and running away about 10 minutes later.
Ring camera footage from across the street also showed a man running from the burning home toward the school.
According to the affidavit, a person shown the footage identified the man as Carie, saying they recognized him by his walk and clothing.
Another witness told investigators Carie left an adjoining apartment around 9 p.m. wearing a hoodie, light-colored pants and white sneakers.
When he returned between 10 and 10:30 p.m., the witness said he was shirtless and wearing shorts, but still had on the same white sneakers.
When Carie was arrested Thursday, investigators said he appeared to have a burn near his right ankle, along with red knuckles and several scratches.
