27th Annual Shop with a Cop Brings Holiday Cheer to Local Children

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - The holiday season is off to a cheerful start for some families in Knox County.

The community came together Tuesday for the 27th annual Shop with a Cop event in Vincennes.

Students from Vincennes Lincoln High School, Vincennes Rivet, North Knox, and South Knox joined officers from the Vincennes Police Department, Bicknell Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation, Knox County Probation, the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office, Knox County DCS, and the Carlisle Correctional Facility to take children from Pace’s Head Start program Christmas shopping.

“This year’s event was a little smaller than years past, but that allowed us to spend a little more on each kid, which was nice,” Detective Doug Lowe of the Vincennes Police Department told WAKC News Now.

According to Pace’s Communication Manager Courtney Welage, 77 children participated this year.

Each child was paired with a local officer and given $250 to spend from their personal wish list, which often included essentials like shoes and jackets, along with toys.

“Every year is memorable no matter what happens,” Detective Lowe said. “I have done this every year of my career, and every year is memorable in its own way.”

Welage, who participated in the program as a student volunteer, said being involved as an adult is incredibly rewarding.

“Being on the other side and seeing the incredible amount of work and coordination it takes to make this day happen, I’m even more proud to play a small part in it,” she said.

“I’m truly grateful for the perspective I now have—to get to know these kids, see the excitement in their eyes, and witness firsthand the impact this program has on their lives.”

Detective Lowe told WAKC News Now that the event wouldn't be possible without the community's support.

“Over 200 people and businesses donate to this event, and they are the reason we are able to get these kids clothes and toys,” he said.

“The officers are just the shoppers—the community is what truly makes this day possible.”

Those interested in donating to Shop with a Cop can mail or drop off checks at the Vincennes Police Department, 501 Busseron Street in Vincennes.

Checks should be made payable to Shop with a Cop.
