Accident Report Uncovers New Details Into Recent Coal Mine Incident


KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - WAKC News Now has learned new details regarding an incident that happened Sunrise Coal in Knox County earlier this month.


The incident occurred in an underground mine just before midnight on Thursday, October 10.


According to an accident report published on the Mine Safety and Health Administration's website, eight employees were injured.


Two miners were airlifted from Mine One Portal Two on P Perry Road in Bruceville, while four others were transported to the hospital by ambulance.


The report states that the employees were riding in a mantrip when it collided with the corner of a coal rib.


All employees on board, including the driver, sustained various injuries in the collision.


One passenger received fourteen staples to the head, while another suffered a concussion and a contusion on the left forearm.


Other injuries reported include fractured knees, nasal fractures, lip abrasions, and an ankle sprain.


According to the report, most of the injured employees were off work for a few days.


Sunrise Coal in Oaktown and its operator, Hallador Energy Company, have not responded to WAKC New Now's requests for comment.


WAKC News Now has also contacted the Mine Safety and Health Administration to confirm if the mine has received any citations related to the October 10 collision.
